Your Heart……

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
What does it mean to guard your heart?
Why is it important to do so?
How does your heart lead you?
When you ignore your heart, what happens?

  1. I’ve wondered what guarding your heart truly means. Does it just have to do with romantic relationships? Some may argue that is the case, but I disagree–I think guarding your heart is more than that.
I think your heart goes along with your head in making your decisions. Because of this, I think one must learn to guard your heart with your head in order to avoid making decisions one will certainly regret.
Admittedly, I googled “guarding your heart” and this is what came up first: http://www.relevantmagazine.com/life/what-guarding-your-heart-actually-means
My favorite quote is this one: “We should look straight ahead and fix our gaze directly on our Savior (Proverbs 4:25), not allowing sin to creep into our vision, hearing and hearts.”

  2. I’m reading a book called True Love Dates by Debra Fileta (http://truelovedates.com/) and I LOVE her definition of “guarding your heart”: “Guarding you heart means protecting the deepest parts of who you are–both your emotional and spiritual worlds–from anyone who could cause them harm” (page number unknown because my Kindle doesn’t show it, but it’s in the 7th chapter).

  3. Another good quote about guarding your heart by Holley Gerth in the book You’re Already Amazing (http://www.amazon.com/Youre-Already-Amazing-Embracing-Becoming/dp/0800720601): “While God does want us to be open with others, he also encourages us to put boundaries in place as we do. He talks repeatedly about guarding our hearts. So what’s the difference. Hiding is a response out of fear, while guarding is a proactive choice to protect what matters most [italicized]. In other words, we’re not to deliberately put something of worth where it won’t be valued” (106).
